“Your Africa Golf Safari was without a doubt the finest
golf tour we’ve taken—thank you so much for making our dream
come true!” –R.L. (New York, NY)
Scheduled Golf Courses:
ERINVALE GC - par 72, 6,725 yards - At the very heart of the
Cape, amongst verdant green vineyards, lies the 260-hectare
Golfing Estate Erinvale. Yet another, Gary Player designed
course, Erinvale presents each golfer with breathtaking
views of the surrounding mountains and sublime beaches just
minutes away. The holes also come complete with their fair
share of water hazards, placing further emphasis on
accuracy. The course is proud to have hosted the World Cup
of Golf in 1997, bearing testament to its quality. WWG
Grade: A-
ROYAL CAPE GC – par 72, 6,675 yards The grand old dame of
the cape was first established in 1885, members of Royal
Cape will testify that little has changed in over 100 years.
Nine South African Open and eight South African Amateur
championships have been staged at Royal Cape, a measure of
the high esteem in which the course is held. Gary Player won
the South African Open here in 1965 with a record
15?under?par score of 273. WWG Grade: A-
STELLENBOSCH GC – par 74, 6,890 yards On the outskirts of
town on the road to Somerset West, along the well-known Cape
Wine route, lies the Stellenbosch GC, one of the top course
of the Cape region. This championship course offers
beautiful views of the historic town of Stellenbosch, the
surrounding vineyards and the mountains from each tee.
Highlighted holes include, the 495 yard par- five 8th which
is referred to as the “snakes and grapes” hole, slice here
and your ball is in the snake infested bush, hook it and you
are out of bounds left into the vineyards. This is the home
course of US PGA golfer David Frost. WWG Grade: A-
SPARREBOSCH GC – par 72, 6271 yards Sparrebosch, the Classic
Ocean 18, was opened for play officially on 5 August 2000.
The breathtaking views combine with an amazing marriage
between environmentally sensitive development and Mother
Nature to create Southern Africa’s postcard to golf. The
layout of this championship course was carefully planned to
feature both ocean views (on all eighteen holes) as well as
lagoon and mountain views (holes 6, 7 and 8). WWG Grade: A
FANCOURT LINKS– par 72, 6925 yards - The brilliant new links
layout is the best golf course to be built in all of Africa
in years, the course will play host to the 2003 Presidents
Cup matches, a testament to its high standard and high
praise since its inception in fall of 2001. Thousands of
tons of earth were moved to create giant dunes and the
bunkering is a fine as can be found, similar to the St.
Andrews style of links golf. WWG Grade: A+
MONTAGU GC – par 72, 6,595 yards - Designed by Gary Player
at the beautiful Fancourt Resort, the Montagu is noteworthy
for both its scenic beauty as well as challenging design.
The course captures the natural beauty of the Garden Route
and its stunning surroundings with prodigious mountain
ranges providing the back drop. The course is always in top
condition and the kikuyu fairways and bent grass greens are
possibly the best in South Africa. 1The course is
consistently rated in the top five courses in Africa. WWG
Grade: A
LOST CITY GC – par 72, 6,750 yards Gary Player firmly
believes that he has managed to create one of the top
courses in the world at the Lost City, with its desert style
front nine and 'Out of Africa' back nine. 'For me, a great
course is one you remember,' he says. 'If you go to Augusta
National and play it just once, you will always remember
each and every hole. And 1 think the same applies to the
Lost City.' Certainly the par?three 13th at the Lost City is
unforgettable. The green is the shape of the African
continent, while three big bunkers are filled with different
coloured sand to symbolise the diversity of the people of
this country and continent. The view from the elevated tee
is truly magnificent and a wide enclosure just left of the
green contains more than 40 huge crocodiles and hundreds of
golf balls, the legacy of pulled or hooked tee shots.
Everywhere there are breathtaking views of the beautiful
bushveld and mountainous terrain. WWG Grade: A
GARY PLAYER CC – par72, 7,640 yards The Gary Player Country
Club course at Sun City has become known all over the world
as the venue for the annual Million Dollar Challenge in
December, when fans in their tens of thousands turn out to
see the great golf. Most of the game's superstars graced the
fairways of this magnificent bushveld course, carved out of
an extinct volcano in the wild (largely unexplored) and
wonderful (rich plant, animal and birdlife) Pilanesberg
mountains, and surrounded by high ground on all sides. Since
the inaugural Million Dollar Challenge in 1982, the Sun City
course has consistently provided a superb, world-class test
for the likes of Nick Price, Nick Faldo, David Frost,
Bernhard Langer, Ernie Els and Steve Ballesteros. Towards
the mid-1990s the spectacular layout was in such good
condition that Langer (not a man to exaggerate) put it in
the same class as Spain's Valderamma and America's Augusta
National. Off the back markers the course measures among the
longest courses in world golf. It is a par 72, but the
rating is 76. WWG Grade: A+
